Heather har studert ved The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Hun var finalist i BBCs Young Traditional Musician of the Year i 2015.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS

Tone Hulbækmo was one of the first to revive the extinct Norwegian harp tradition. In her debut album “Kåmmå no” the sound of this harp was recorded for the first time. Since then, she has developed her very own harp playing style. She plays Norwegian folk music, European medieval music and modern crossover music, and accompanies herself singing, both folk songs and her own songs with lyrics by Norwegian poets. In addition, she composes new instrumental music where she uses the harp more as a modern instrument. She has

also brought the harp with her around the world playing with musicians from other cultures. Tone has been awarded three “Spellemannprisen” awards for her albums, in which the harp has been an important ingredient. Tone will talk about her journey in the exploration of the folk harp, what is known about the old harp tradition, and about different harps which have been preserved. She will also play for us to show how she uses the harp. In medieval times the harp was said to have magical powers, and Tone will perform several medieval ballads about the magic of the harp.

Heather Downie is known world-wide for her innovate performance and her passion for teaching. Having graduated with a first class honours BA in Scottish music, Heather went on to achieve distinction in a PGDip in performance studies. She has toured and recorded with many artists and was a finalist in the BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year. Having discovered a deep love for teaching, Heather is now best known for her energetic and enthusiastic approach to teaching. She is the Principal Scottish harp tutor at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and in high demand for workshops, courses and masterclasses not just in harp but in teacher training. Heather sets out her vision for all harpist working with her: 'Most of all I want you to feel confident and happy in yourself and your harping. This is the key. If you feel happy and positive about your harp journey you will play more and more...and if you play more and more you will become the best harpists you can be! This is what I will help you become!'

Nancy Thym_Viking Ship.jpeg

The program

Nancy Thym will take us on a virtual tour of the Archive & Museum for Harp History in Freising, Germany and on a tour of her collection, including the Norwegian harps.  She will demonstration the different sounds produced by gut and wire strings, bray pins or a double row of alternating notes. We will take a look at some of her iconography and photos. She has spent many years researching the history of the harp in Norway and will bring this knowledge to her presentation.

Nancy has been collecting harps, literature, music, photos of harps, advertisements using harps, harp figurines, etc. for over 40 years. Her collection includes over 40 original 18th, 19th and early 20th century harps as well as reconstructions of medieval and Renaissance harps.

About

Nancy Thym’s programs, which combine harp music, songs, stories and dance, are warmly received all over the world. In her native California, she studied theater, dance and anthropology and later folklore and ethnomusicology. For over forty years she has lived in Germany where she transforms her extensive research on the history of the harp into programs which are both entertaining and educational: storytelling combined with songs and harp music, ballad programs on specific themes, or one-woman theater pieces in which she portrays harpists of the past.

She performs on a variety of historical harps and her repertoire encompasses many styles: medieval music, ancient Scottish ballads, early romantic German Lieder, songs of the 19th-century itinerant harpers. Nancy is recognized as a leading scholar on the history and playing technique of the Norwegian krogharpe as well as the itinerant Bohemian and German hook harp players.
